Photo to the left shows the wall shield. It is  slightly tilted and if it makes 1.2m here, on the  base 8 m more low, it is more thick.
We notice many things on this wall, quite to the left (to see section " study doors " a arc of vault, we have a wall shield added afterward, an internal staircase which led can be in hourds or curtains,  but also, one little to see the wall of the former(old) castle. We notice a square hole of 20 cms aside and 2 m of length which looks like the location of a bar(helm) of closure(lock) (see section doors).  Was a door in this place originally, then walled up? The central collapse would mark the location it this former(old) door? The only ones of the archaeologists could answer it. Of course we do not  speak about what is down and what reserves many surprises! We notice the re-use of stones of a still older building...  I like to seach !
We can see the problem which puts the lack of protection in the  North. The wall does not serve in much, no curtain, crénaux, etc.  that is why the ripe(mature) North of the castle was covered of a "  wall shield ". The ground in the North being sloping, it is easy to  bombard the surrounding wall(speaker) or the castle.
The just photo to the left, shows the stages of  construction of the wall shield and of the  staircase. We notice épaisseures three, the  central part(party) being the oldest, the wall  shield and the staircase added afterward. We  notice a hole of bar(helm), which condemned a  door! Strange!
Not easy to find, but here is an example of right(straight)  staircase inserted into the wall leading to the donjon. That  this is in the castle of Ventadour. We do not note the  presence of tour(tower, ballot) staircase, studies are to be  made on the various systems of communication between  floors. At least an internal staircase had to be in the South  of Mantaille. Discovered to this day.
Circular stairwell in the ruins of the castle of Rochechinard.  We do not find it to Mantaille. This genre of staircase takes  much less place than the right staircases. But remember  that Mantaille does not contain circular tower.
Castle of Ventadour. In spite of some  arrangements(developments) revival, he(it) looks like  beaucoups to Mantaille according to me.
Rochechinard. Exemple of castle. 3 Different periods.
Detail of north wall and window.
Walls to Mantaille, it is not what what misses(is lacking): often even there is too much!!! It is not easy to find itself there and me in were needed many hours to be able to indicate to you and  show my deductions. Furthermore, as already said, it is not a Mr. Duke who drew the plan of ruins 120 years ago which can help us. He(it) would even tend to sow(scatter) the confusion. It is  thus necessary to leave zero. I personally made many measures through brambles, trees and tiny creatures of all kinds but I have another no overview of the building. Naturally, the main  problem is that many of these walls are under meters of earth and rubbles. This column(section) will thus be brought to be regularly changed according to the evolution of the study. How to  begin? Simply by the walls which remain still standing, then collapsed walls but visible, then invisible or imaginary...
For a thousand-year-old castle, abandoned and plundered(given up and plundered) for 600 years, he(it) goes still not too badly, and still, a good part(party) is underground. Bigger than  what we can even in the tower of Albon for example. We remain still impressed by the size(greatness) of the building. It is certainly this isolation which allows its conservation.
100 years between both photos
We notice that an element of Mantaille remains very impressive: the north wall, which is in fact, égalment, a cage(goal) of right(straight) staircase in 2 vollées. This very impressive wall  + of 3 m in thickness, is strengthened by 2 shields of about 2,50 m of thickness. The height seen by the Farmyard is very impressionante, 18 meters more or less.
Noth wall :
We can see the endomaged staircase, a part in the wall, 60 cm large. One to reach the roof, and a lookout post, pehaps see hourds on the north face.
This plan shows in something near how this staircase had to be. The blue  parts(parties), are éffondrées parts(parties). In summer, 2012 I discover that  the staircase restarts below in almost right(straight) angle, For decendre still  of a floor along the wall is. Not visible because bury.
Here is an interesting thing discovered in  June, 2011: we notice the holes of boulins,  regular and penetrating on this wall. We  also notice other holes the  arrangement(measure) of which leaves no  room at random! Apparently a skeleton  for a roof. The wall came in almost  right(straight) angle, but it collapsed, and  moved away from 80 cms. Beams must  one have carried(worn) of 6 meters up to  the next wall, parallel, not visible at  present.
Hole 2.2 m long for closing ancien door? Possible!
Vaults :
This is a small chapter concerning vaults. We imagine obviously that rooms bent are (or found) to Mantaille. Certain texts speak about it without more details.  Nevertheless, in the course of my search I was able to find this arc.
I denounce here the imbecile  drinkers of beer who broke  the brick-built wall, updating  a reservoir. Indeed, no  underground passage, no  cellar, but a reservoir of  recycling of rainwater. I do  not know how to rappeller  that it is forbidden to make  celà, as it is forbidden to use  a metal detector on the site.  Archaeological remains are  widely visible, thus we do not  affect. This is important for  the compréhesion of the site  and for its understanding.  The persons ayan, t make it  are unconscious and  especially take risks. I in call  to your sense of the  responsibility.
